Roots is a collaborative effort of Damon Stone, Liz Powell, and Steven Watkins, each of whom is dedicated to promoting Blues dance and Blues music and creating an atmosphere where dancers can explore the expressiveness of the dance.
Think you know what Blues dancing is all about? We may surprise you! At Roots, we aim to recreate the intimate feel of the Rent House Parties and Jook Joints of yesteryear as well as the sophistication and elegance of the Savoy Ballroom. But don't worry, as much as we have a love for the history of Blues music and dance, we don't live in the past.
Steven Watkins and our guest DJs play the best Blues and Blues-rooted music from all time periods for your dancing pleasure, creating a unique blend that has the rest of the country jealous and will remind you why Blues was once the party music of choice.
Our resident instructors, Damon Stone and Heidi Fite, are much sought after locally and internationally and, along with special guest instructors, provide dance instruction in the living tradition of the Blues. We have a progressive series each month presenting different forms of Blues Dancing for experienced Blues Dancers.
